How to Hang Curtains Like a Pro
GO WIDE—The curtain rod should go 4” to 6” beyond the window on either side. This will let the curtain panels frame the window, covering both the inside and the outside of the window frame.
HANG ‘EM HIGH—Floor to ceiling is best if possible, if not, allow 4” to 6” of the curtains to hang above the window (while they still touch the floor). This will make your room seem taller! Win!
DON’T FALL SHORT—Keeping the last tip in mind, make sure the bottom of the curtains hit right at the floor. If you have to choose between hanging the curtains high or having them touch the floor, always choose touching the floor.
BE GENEROUS—If you’re using the curtain panels to just frame the window, the width isn’t as important, but if you want them to fully cover the window when closed and still look full, the panels should be 2 ½ times the width of the window.
GET SMART—Use a template to measure and mark where to hang the curtain rod. You can cut it out of paper or cardboard and flip it over for either side of the window. You’ll be able to hang the curtain rod more level and will save yourself time measuring.
