Family-Friendly Basement Furniture Makeover
Basements are one of those spaces that can either be really amazing or a big fat letdown. It’s easy for us to put our cast-off furniture down there and whatever left-over décor we have…and call it a day.
When I started working with my clients almost 9 months ago now, her basement was somewhere in the middle of amazing and let-down. It had some really nice elements to work with—daylight windows, built-in cabinets, and plenty of space. It also had some let-down things too—older, mis-matched furniture, a full-size bar that wasn’t being used and that took up a lot of space, and the whole space was really dark.
My clients’ ultimate goal for the basement is that it would be a place their large family could gather to watch movies and sporting events, celebrate holidays, and make memories! Just one problem…the basement was not looking its best for any of this and there definitely wasn’t enough space or seating available for the growing family.

I worked with my clients on a plan to reimagine the space, including remodeling the wet bar area. You can see all of that HERE. Knowing their ultimate plan was to make this a space for entertaining, we knew they wanted the convenience of a bar, but not the space that it took up. A sleek wet bar was the answer. This also freed-up space for a full-size dining table, with seating for up to 6 people, including the TABLE, SIDE CHAIRS, and BENCH. The table will be perfect for spreading out with games or puzzles—or filled-up with food for family get-togethers!
The dining table was just one of several pieces of furniture and accessories we purchased from Homemakers Furniture. It’s nice to have a store option, here in Des Moines, IA, where I can meet a client to shop and have several options for them to choose from. My clients and I were able to find the majority of the items for their basement makeover at Homemakers.
While my clients already had a sectional, they were ready for something new. I thought a sectional was still the direction to go, but it needed to accommodate their needs for seating and comfort. We were able to find a great option HERE for them that they could customize with the fabric of their choice—always a nice thing to make the space even more personalized. You can learn more about options for customization HERE.
The whole time we were talking about what furniture to add to the basement makeover, I knew that I wanted to somehow add a SOFA TABLE with STOOLS for extra seating. I wanted to maximize the seating in this basement remodel and knew that a sofa table would be a great way to do that without sacrificing too much space. The piece we chose ended up working so perfectly with the sectional and in the space…it’s like it was meant to be. It could be used as a little homework station, if needed, and has plenty of room for plates and drinks. There’s even a ledge that butts-up against the back of the furniture that people sitting on the sectional will be able to use too—plus, the stools slide underneath to stay out of the way.
The other pieces that really made a difference in the space are the two SWIVEL ACCENT CHAIRS. Not only are they a great pop of color (we were able to select custom fabric on them as well), but they swivel! The television is set off to the side of the chairs, but they can easily swivel so that whoever is sitting in them will still have a great view. How nice to not have to move furniture around just to be able to watch the tv!
There were so many other pieces we purchased from Homemakers Furniture that helped to pull this basement entertainment space together! We rounded-out the look with ACCENT TABLES, a large custom ottoman, MIRROR, both a table and floor lamp for extra light, and a big area rug to tie the space together—oh and all the pretty wall art too!
I had actually been looking at the 4 pieces of wall art above the swivel chairs before I even went shopping with my client. I knew they would look perfect in her space with the color palette we’d chosen. At the time, I was thinking two of them, but then we had that big open wall and I just had to buy four of them to make a big statement! I think the effect turned out great and I’m so glad Homemakers had them for us to use.
I am so pleased with how this basement makeover went. The furniture pieces we chose to replace the ones my clients already had will serve their needs so much better! It was handy for them to be able to buy all of them from Homemakers so they could line up financing all in one place…and only worry about setting up one date for delivery.
I’ve had so many compliments on this space and an equal number of questions about where everything came from. I’ve shared all the links with you here so you can grab these same pieces for yourself!
