I have told myself the last two years that I'm not going to go overboard with the CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS, but each year, I start going through my totes and I just have a really hard time not getting out all my vintage treasures! I've been collecting these goodies for several years and I love looking at them all. In my mind, they are out for such a small period of time (usually Nov. 1-Jan...) that they all deserve to be shown off.
I love the way the everyday color palette of our home just works so well with the vintage Christmas that I collect. Of course when I'm out searching for new pieces, I somewhat keep in mind what I already have and what will work together, but a lot of the time, it just all jives together! I finally found a way to DISPLAY MERCURY GLASS TREE TOPPERS and I'm so happy! I've had a couple break in the past and this solution is much more stable.
I have so many vintage mercury glass ornaments already and tend to acquire more through the season, many of which are SHINY BRITES, that I just kind of rotate them into the displays by scattering them on trays and in bowls around the house. Eventually, they'll end up sorted by color or pattern. I really do like them all jumbled together, though.
With all of the vintage mercury glass ornaments I have, storage is very important...not only to maximize space, but to keep them all safe! I found these CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT STORAGE BAGS a couple of years ago and they are by far the best option I've found! I stocked up and was able to get rid of all the mish-mash containers I had!
I don't always love that we live in an open-concept home, but it is neat to see all the Christmas decorations in one spot. I love the way they all work together, even though, I have mostly vintage...with a bit of new mixed in. I also learned a couple of years ago HOW TO PUT ART ON A TELEVISION even when it's not a Frame TV.
This medicine cabinet came out of my great grandparents' farmhouse in southern Iowa. It lived at my aunt's house and when she moved several years ago, she gifted it to me. I enjoy decorating it at Christmas with little vintage odds and ends, since it feels like an extra special spot. This year, I had a very simple theme of mostly deer on display.
Okay...I have never really been a fan of Santa. I don't always think decorations with his likeness are cute...they can even be kind of scary I think! A few years ago, though, I happened across my first vintage Santa mug and, well...you can see what happened. I told myself last year that I was done collecting, but I did have a few mugs find me (and they were super inexpensive), so I did add them to the other Santas...
Santa blow molds have been a fun addition as well because they have such great size and presence. I have never had all the big ones out on display before (there is another one across from these you can't see in this pic), but this year I decided to group them together and love the look!
We didn't have a mantel at our old house and I was always sad I didn't have that to decorate. Since we have a great space here for displaying vintage Christmas decorations, I try to come up with a different look every year to show off some of my collection. The only thing that is the same this year and last year is my large vintage jewelry tree art. I had been wanting one forever and found this beauty at a Christmas antique show in Des Moines called Junk Jubilee and Jingles. I got it for what I think is a fair price and love it...especially because it lights up!
With the addition of a large, energetic kitten to our house this year, I wasn't sure how he would do with a real tree...with all of my vintage mercury glass ornaments hanging from it. That is literally all I have for decorations and I couldn't stomach the thought of him destroying them. I had to come up with a creative idea for a "tree" and a way to display some of my ornaments safely. I found this A-FRAME SHELF online and knew it would be perfect to make our Christmas tree!
I had several of the glass jars already, but did purchase a few new too. I will always have a need for nice jars, so I didn't mind investing in a few more!
I think the best part of decorating with vintage Christmas is all the details and the memories they can bring up. I love the colors and stacking + displaying them together. It makes me especially happy when I share my decor on Instagram and it brings up a memory for a follower that they're able to enjoy and, in turn, share with me. Christmas, after all, is about the memories we make with our loved ones.
I needed a spot for some Christmas flowers, so I grabbed this trash can from my stash, turned it upside down, added a plate and...voila! An instant occasional table!
Another favorite vintage Christmas collection are my putz houses. I think I bought my first one for 59 cents or something silly like that. Since then, I have yet to find such a good deal, but I try to pick them up whenever I can find them for $5 or less!
Our laundry room even gets a little Christmas cheer! I love sprinkling bottle brush trees throughout the house. they're such an easy way to give the look of Christmas without a lot of effort. Oh yeah...and they can't be broken! The mercury glass beads in the strawberry preserves jar belonged to my grandma, which makes this display even more special!
The rest of my vintage jewelry Christmas trees ended up on the picture ledge in our bedroom. I couldn't love them any more, honestly. I leave them on display the rest of the year in a spot leading down to our basement. I know that look probably wouldn't be for everyone, but I think they're too special to hide away.
I know this was kind of a chaotic Christmas home tour post, without a lot of how-to's, but I hope it gave you lots of visual inspiration! You might even have a few of these vintage goodies tucked away in your own home, but weren't sure how to display them. I'd love to see what you do with them this year!
