5 Tips to Decorate Your House—When You Don’t Love to Decorate
I know I shouldn’t have favorites…but sometimes I do. Occasionally, I get to work with clients who want their space to look nice, but don’t want to have a lot of input on the project. They (pretty much) let me take free reign! I mean, I for sure get an understanding of what colors/styles they prefer, but after that, they just kind of let me run with the project!
This doesn’t work with all clients, but there are those rare ones who want their space to be finished, have a home they’re proud of, but also…just don’t enjoy shopping for and decorating their home. This is where I come in! I love helping these clients to see how wonderful it can be to put some time (and money) into their house to make it an actual home. Wanna know something else? They always love it when it’s done! Suddenly they’re inviting friends over—excited to share their new space with them! It’s important to take pride in your house. You’re more likely to keep up with projects, you can open it up to family and friends, and it just makes you happy in your soul!
I want to share a few to help you decorate your house—even when you don’t like to decorate:
Hire a professional. If you can afford it, this can be such a burden lifted off your shoulders! Even if they don’t do the entire project for you, but just lay the ground work, you’ll be amazed at how helpful this can be! Hint…it’s often not as expensive as you think.
Look around at the décor and finishes you already have. What color do you have a lot of? What are you drawn to? Is there a pattern or texture that you love? All of these are clues as to what brings you joy in your space. Once you have an idea of what you like/don’t like, it will be easier to eliminate the things you don’t want to be in the space and to add new items to create the look you want.
Create a Pinterest board. Create a board specifically for the space you’re working in. Only add things that you truly love and that you’d enjoy seeing daily. This can be anything from colors, fabrics, furniture, décor styling, rugs…you name it. You can create a space that you love using inspiration from other people! (You can find me on Pinterest HERE.)
Stick to one space at a time. If you can, keep your focus on one area of your house at a time. Trying to visualize what one space will look like is hard enough, without bringing other rooms into the mix. If you need to blend the spaces together, if they open into one-another or you’re trying to have a very cohesive space, then you will need to consider all the rooms involved. This might be where you could hire some help…so you can have a clearer vision of what needs to be done. If not, though, just stick to the one room you’re working on, to make things easier on yourself.
Don’t rush it. A finished space takes time. Even if you have all the main pieces in place, it may take a while to find the right art or décor for the space. You don’t want to settle on something you don’t love, just for the sake of being done. Especially since, if you don’t love to decorate, you probably won’t change this space out for a long while! Let the room take shape over time and evolve as you get into the process.
If you’re someone who doesn’t love to decorate…it’s ok! You’re not alone and you do have options. I hope you’ll be willing to ask for help when you need it and allow your home to be everything it can be! Even if you do love to decorate, I think the tips above can be helpful for you too. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by a home decorating or remodeling project, especially when we live in the space every day. It’s easy to see things a certain way and have a creative block when it comes to envisioning it in a new way. I always enjoy reading in magazines, when they share a creative person’s home, that they’ve hired a decorator for certain projects. Everyone needs help now and again!
